The Coat - Pleats
Jan. 27th, 2012 10:24 pmGot the easy bits of the outer shell done. The vent in the centre back could be a bit higher, but am NOT going to muck up the wool and tear out the stay-stitch triangle at the top just for the extra inch.

In which I cut the wool. And then I decided it wasn't long enough, and cut more. Which meant I had to do the interlining by hand AGAIN, but the Coat is not the Coat if it, A. Isn't Long Enough, or B. Doesn't swirl.

I look at the test coat I have wrought, and it is good. I also see a number of areas that need tweaking. But for what it is, it is not bad, and is totally wearable and not just a rubbishy costume piece. Though if my friend uses it for that, I don't give a toss, it's done.

A Study in Coats - Part 6?
Dec. 20th, 2011 11:24 pmDamned if I can remember where I am on this. Not much to report - am still plodding through the tester coat toile.
Got one sleeve on, the collar is attached. Still to do - the lining.
Nonetheless - looking very COATY (though the colour isn't very Sherlock.). And I tried it on, and it swishes just fine. God I am good.
No, really. For a hack who sells things at times, and never did formal tailoring or even a sewing course? Oh yeah.
I don't feel like being modest about this.
I still have issues. but this is why you make a test piece, yeah?

A Study in Coats - Part 5
Dec. 18th, 2011 09:59 pmI am feeling particularly cock-blocked on several fronts at the moment. Stuck on the fanfic I am writing, MtC, refusing to write anything more on Westmoreland until I get unstuck, and the damned coat toile/practice piece is giving me fits. Thank god I am not keeping it - I am giving it to Jamie.
Else I would do to it what I do to all projects which stymie - take it back and set FIRE to the fucker. Okay, well that only happened once, with that wood working project when I was trying to steam and curve wood.

A Study in Coats - 4
Dec. 11th, 2011 08:17 pmBit by bit, when I feel like it, the coat comes together. The next bit concerns the support for the front of the coat, interfacing, which is made of wool and goat hair which helps it adhere and grab the wool of the coat. It pissed me off, too, because it cost more than the fecking wool itself, but I swore I would try actual tailoring stuff and this was part of it. NOT CONVINCED.

A Study in Coats - Part 1
Dec. 7th, 2011 06:23 pmSo. So, I am embarking an a relatively ambitious project. Although there are cosplay places to buy The Coat, I don't want to bother because:
A. I can sew.
B. I have freakishly long arms. Nothing store bought fits them.
C. I like stupidly ambitious projects.
D. I want to try out some tailoring techniques, see if that helps the look of the coat.
E. I can SEW. So I will.
Well, where to begin? The Coat.
