A Study in Coats - Part 5

jessamygriffithI am feeling particularly cock-blocked on several fronts at the moment. Stuck on the fanfic I am writing, MtC, refusing to write anything more on Westmoreland until I get unstuck, and the damned coat toile/practice piece is giving me fits. Thank god I am not keeping it - I am giving it to Jamie.
Else I would do to it what I do to all projects which stymie - take it back and set FIRE to the fucker. Okay, well that only happened once, with that wood working project when I was trying to steam and curve wood.
But it is said in sewing that it is not a real project without blood, tears and throwing it across the room. Last time I had that reaction, the costume piece was flung into the corner, pins and all and vindictively left for two weeks. I knew I would get back to it - it was a commission piece, but goddamn.
So, got the major pattern pieces for the wool cut, and the lining. I decided it was time to work at the practice toile in the blue cotton velvet and practice the pockets - in particular the welt breast pockets.
WELT POCKETS. I have done one. All I can think now is - fuck you, Belstaff. Fuck you. Are they actually meant to be functional? Because they gape. There's not space enough, even in the REAL Sherlock coat, for anything to fit in except a mobile, and it would fall out. Unless there's a hidden zip or button. What a waste of effort. I would rather have put fake plackets on then do the actual welt pocket, looks a bit shite.
Also, the back looks better but not perfect, and it tortures me. Granted, wool is SO much more forgiving. Thank god this is the practice piece or I might do Stage two of Sewing and cry.
The blue velveteen toile pattern is actually a bit short, but that is fine, I lengthened the pieces for the wool.
Okay. So I am happy about the back pleats. And the front. But I hate the pockets, all of them. And the top wrinkly part of the back.
