Well, the mortal!human/immortal!elf angst thing has been done to death, ditto elf/dwarf hate!sex; and after the initial thrill there's really not much going on with hobbit/dragon smut; orcs nonconning the furry woodland creatures (and everyone else) was getting old (although that one where they gang-banged Saruman still made him chuckle); as for rangers/Ents - yeah, well, even HE was not going there; and even his old standby, Gandalf/Balrog (mmmm, the infinite possibilities during that infinite fall!) was just no longer working for him... yeah, fresh 'verses, that's what he needs.
Hmm... ponies in Omegaverse? Thing is, all these people will start pointing out that equines don't knot, and it wasn't in the Beauty trilogy either, so where the hell did that come from? And then others will spring to our defense, and say it's our verse now, don't be shaming our kinks*. And that'll spawn all its own wank...

PS I have never read fanfic in TLOTR, but listing all those possibilities above makes me wonder if I've been missing something...
