The Coat - Hem, Buttons

Okay, so the lapels that were a shade too big irritated me. I ripped them up and narrowed them 1 cm.

The buttonholes - I found in one pic there is ONE in black on the front edge that underlaps the other breast of the coat. I had been wondering it there was a snap or something - the pics are never detailed enough to see things. You need something to keep it from sagging whe you do up the coat.

The red buttonholes - not completely happy. I had planned on handsewing them, except I am ABYSMAL at doing a proper buttonhole by hand. I tried on one. Not showing you that close up.

So - buttonhole machine. Except my buttons (2.8 cm) are a shade too big for the biggest cam (2.5 and it makes a difference) and I had to lift and extend them... not completely happy but this event I am doing the coat for is next weekend. I can fix them later by hand if needed.

Yes, red silk buttonholes. Ain't I posh?

In other tediousness not worth taking pics of, I got the hem trimmed to the proper length and sewn. Yes, by hand. It has a nice deep hem in case of... I don't know. I like LONG coats. This is the proper Benedict length though.

Buttons - applied with heavy thread, waxed and ironed to have the wax soak in. Prevents annoying catches and tangles when sewing, lets the thread last longer when it's under stress. Felt placed behind the buttons to keep from stressing the wool when the buttons are yanke on all the time.

All buttons are on now, inclduing the one under the collar. That is for the fur collar seen only once in the series - when Sherlock is in Minsk. And ladies and gents, may I just say. I have a thing for fur, as politically incorrect as that is. I don't know if Belfast used a real fur for their collar or not but...

Sherlock. Black fur collar. The pale skin. Rowr, I say.
